The United States government has raised security concerns regarding the aviation system in Mexico, in a move that prevents Mexican carriers from launching new aviation services in the United States.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA, for its acronym in English) said Tuesday that in a review by its counterpart in the Mexican government, the Federal Civil Aviation Agency, or AFAC, “it identified several areas of non-compliance with the minimum standards of ICAO security. ”ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization, a body associated with the United Nations that connects aviation regulators from around the world.

The United States has given most aviation systems a Category 1 rating. With this downgrade, Mexico is now in Category 2 along with Bangladesh, Curaçao, Ghana, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, Venezuela and a coalition of states. in the Caribbean that share an aviation authority.

CNN has reached out to the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation office for comment.

The National Chamber of Air Transport (Canaero) made a publication on its Twitter account regarding the degradation of Mexico to Category 2 and called on the AFAC and the federal government to "take technical, human and budgetary measures necessary to recover Category 1 and thus reduce the serious impact on national industry, jobs and the contribution to Mexico's GDP.

The FAA did not specify the precise nature of the problem with Mexico's aviation system, but said the decision reflects that the system is not up to the task of ensuring safety.

The FAA said it is "ready to provide expertise and resources" to help the country comply with regulations, and that it believes the AFAC has "a commitment to the safety of civil aviation."
