It was a big sigh of relief after a month-long break: the Machado Quartet's concert on Saturday evening opened the cultural round of 2021 in the Tölzer Kurhaus. The four guitarists enjoyed their repertoire and brought out classical guitar music, opera adaptations and rock.

Bad Tölz -

At the beginning, the four musicians stood on the empty stage in the Tölzer Kurhaus and immediately conjured up a holiday atmosphere: With the southern sounds from the famous French film “Chocolat” you could just as easily have met them on a piazza.

Guitarist Ingo Veit described what the quartet had been doing over the past few months: “Rehearsed, rehearsed, rehearsed.” But not only because three of them, namely Bernd Prüflinger, Perry Schack and Ingo Veit, are teachers at the Tölzer Music School.

Anna Prüflinger is new to the trio.

She replaces Stefanie Kobras, who, as reported, has left the Machado Quartet.

For almost one and a half hours, including a ventilation break, the four nationally known musicians in the Tölzer Kurhaus brought their style of “Guitarra Nueva” to the ear. This is, as Veit described it, “a style of its own from centuries past”. The ensemble's adaptations of entire orchestral music are amazing. In addition to Rossini's overture to “The Barber of Seville”, they also arranged the ballet music “The Dreispitz” by Manuel de Falla. The story takes place in Spain: a beautiful miller is courted by a vain mayor who is ultimately exposed. The four guitars brought out the folkloric character more clearly than ballet music does, especially with powerful rhythmic accents of flamenco. Bernhard Prüflinger even imitated castanets,by drumming his nails on the edge of the guitar. For this piece, the quartet earned the first roaring applause from the 100 guests. Bernhard Prüflinger said with a smile all over his face: "It's so good!"

For eight months, said Perry Schack, the quartet had not given a concert.

The four musicians from Tölzer and Miesbacher Land had conquered an international audience before the pandemic.

The highlight was a performance in New York's Carnegie Hall.

Next concert in Tegernsee

At the first appearance after this long time, the four also delighted with soft tones.

Bernhard Prüflinger set a family story that his wife's grandmother experienced to music: two Ukrainian siblings were brought to the train station by their father during World War II.

He gave the older daughter to a strange family before he got on the train with the younger child himself without turning back.

This story also affected the audience in Tölz.

The musicians hope that more concerts will now be possible again due to the decline in the corona numbers. The musicians thanked the Tölzer Tourist-Info and the music school, which made this concert possible. Above all, however, the four thanked the audience, who had come during the concert despite the mandatory test and despite being required to wear a mask. The next appearance in the region is planned for the end of November in Tegernsee. When the guitarists put the audience into a real rush of rhythm at the end of the performance, including the soundtrack from “Lalaland”, it became clear that you can also hoot under a mask. But then there was the encore - and it got even better: Ingo Veit sat alone on the stage with the guitar over his knees and placed a miniature barrel organ on his instrument. And it began “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. A gigantic conclusion to a brilliant start. (bib)
