The new crown pneumonia epidemic in Hong Kong continues, and identifying invisible patients is an important part of the fight against the epidemic.

An investigation by the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of China found that 6 people were tested for antibodies to the new crown virus, reflecting that they had been infected but had never been diagnosed. The hospital estimated that there are about 20,000 undetected patients with new crown pneumonia in Hong Kong. The ratio of invisible patients is about 1:2. It is estimated that the total number of infected people in Hong Kong is about 33,000, accounting for less than 0.44% of the population of Hong Kong.

The team pointed out that the low infection rate and low vaccination rate, because most people in Hong Kong do not have antibody protection, which means that more than 99% of Hong Kong people need to be vaccinated to be protected.

From April 21, 2020 to April 18, 2021, the research team recruited 4,198 adults over the age of 18 for blood sampling and questionnaire surveys.

Among them, the serum test can identify whether the participants have "immunoglobulin G antibody (IgG)" in order to know whether they are infected with the virus.

Chen Jixiang pointed out that the study found that 6 people were found to have IgG antibodies, indicating that they had been infected earlier, with a rate of 0.14%.

The ratio of confirmed patients to invisible patients is about 1:2

Chen Jixiang, director of the Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine, CUHK, pointed out that the study found that 6 people were tested with IgG antibodies, indicating that they had been infected earlier, the rate was 0.14%; and after statistical adjustments, it can be estimated that the local new coronary pneumonia is hidden. There are close to 20,000 sexually infected patients, accounting for about 0.3% of the population of Hong Kong.

Adding the number of confirmed cases (about 12,000) and estimated minor cases (about 1,756) as of May this year, we can conclude that the total number of infected people in Hong Kong is about 33,000, accounting for less than 0.44% of the population of Hong Kong.

Chen Jixiang said that the current ratio of confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia in Hong Kong to undiscovered hidden cases is 1:2. The figures are better than those in other regions, indicating that the current epidemic prevention measures are effective and "not much is leaked."

However, Chen also pointed out that the low infection rate and low vaccination rate also mean that most people in Hong Kong do not have antibody protection. In other words, about 99.5% of the population in Hong Kong still needs to be vaccinated to be protected. He advised the public to get vaccinated.

5 people have been tested but "leaked" Experts suggest that the sampling process should be strengthened

Specifically comparing the cases of those who have been tested with IgG antibodies, Chen Jixiang pointed out that 1 out of 6 people has no symptoms, travel history, or contact history with the confirmed person, which can be described as "invisible patients", and the remaining 5 people (about 80%) The undetected case was quarantined and tested for the virus, but the result was negative.

Regarding whether it is necessary to improve the current detection method, he said that the sampling process needs to be more rigorous, and some participants in the survey said that the sampling process did not feel uncomfortable, or that the sampling location was not deep enough.

The remaining 5 people (about 80%) of undetected cases have been quarantined. He also received a virus test, but the result was negative.

Neutralizing antibodies in all participants who participated in the study

The team also took blood tests for 111 people who had been vaccinated with two doses of the new crown vaccine, of which 48 were vaccinated with Fubitel and 63 were vaccinated with Kexing.

It was found that neutralizing antibodies can be detected in all citizens 14 days after completing the two doses of the new crown vaccine.

Chen Jixiang said that this data is a booster, confirming that the two vaccines are suitable for Hong Kong people and can provide protection for the vaccinated to reduce the chance of infection or serious complications.

He added that different studies have different calculation methods for the vaccine protection rate. The team's current study is only to detect neutralizing antibodies in the participants. Other studies may include actual infection and critical illness data.
