A resident reports on the impressive moment.

Catania - The natural spectacle on the Etna volcano on the Italian island of Sicily continues: On Wednesday morning,

lava and ash shot out of the crater on the southeast side again.

"The thunder was really so loud that even the doors shook," reported a resident from the vicinity of the city of Catania south of Mount Etna to the German press agency.

Thick smoke could also be seen from the 3300 meter high mountain in the east of the island.

The National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) also confirmed lava flows that flowed down from the crater rim. The ash cloud had risen up to five kilometers in height. Already in the early hours of the morning the volcano spat lava again and made its summit appear fiery red in the sky.

There were initially no reports of injuries or major damage. Mount Etna and Stromboli, on the volcanic island of the same name northeast of Sicily, have been more active again in the past few days. The INGV recorded several outbreaks there.
