Not only has Taiwan's reputation as a "model student in epidemic prevention" broken, but President Tsai Ing-wen's approval rating has also plummeted.

In the latest poll conducted by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation from May 17 to 20, Tsai Ing-wen's reputation value was only 45.7%, a record low in 21 months.

A poll conducted by the TVBS Poll Center from May 11 to 14 also showed that Tsai Ing-wen's support rate dropped from 61% when he was re-elected to 41%, indicating that the Tsai Ing-wen government has turned into a "ruling dilemma."

Tsai Ing-wen will be re-elected with high votes in 2020, and political and external issues are an important support.

At that time, Tsai Ing-wen's promotional film "Speak Loudly" alluded to the current situation in Hong Kong and strengthened the political factors in it. Under this tone, he played the main card of "protecting freedom and democracy," and won many votes with the help of the people's sense of the crisis of losing democracy and freedom.

May 20 marks the fifth anniversary of Tsai Ing-wen’s reign. Tsai Ing-wen went to the Taiwan Ministry of National Defense to inspect the Taiwan Military Epidemic Command Center on the same day. He claimed that while the entire Taiwan was focusing on epidemic prevention, the sharing of aircraft and ships would still be intrusive from time to time, and that the Taiwan military should be close. Monitor the surrounding sea and airspace and dispose of them properly.

External effects recede, lack of internal affairs, and omissions in epidemic prevention

Only after the election campaign and external effects recede, the government's governance will eventually return to internal governance, and internal factors such as the people's livelihood and economy will become the main source of political achievements and support.

However, the performance of Tsai Ing-wen's government has been problematic, so that the public's satisfaction rate with Tsai Ing-wen reached the highest when he was re-elected, and has continued to decline since then, and dissatisfaction has continued to rise.

For example, TVBS conducted a poll on 12 major policies mainly promoted by the Tsai Ing-wen government, and found that only three policies have higher satisfaction than dissatisfaction, and the rest of the projects, such as economic development and policy communication, annuity reform, forward-looking construction plan promotion, South Africa Dissatisfaction is higher than satisfaction to policies, judicial reforms, air pollution improvement, etc.

Among them, dissatisfaction with judicial reform and air pollution improvement is about 60%.

Not to mention the two blackouts in 513 and 517, the DPP Mafia public office turmoil at the beginning of May, and what has been described as the biggest failure of the Tsai government, triggered the largest "autumn fight" in history to introduce the pig controversy.

As for the new crown epidemic that began in May, 53% of the respondents believed that it was a man-made disaster that could have been avoided, and 19% of the people thought it was both a natural disaster and a man-made disaster.

In fact, the Tsai Ing-wen government does not have sufficient control over the new crown epidemic.

One year after the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the inspection volume announced by the government has remained at 16,000 per day, which is completely insufficient compared to the population of more than 20 million in Taiwan.

On the other hand, after Taipei and New Taipei upgraded the epidemic alert to Level 3 on May 15, they failed to detect all people who arrived in Taiwan, and the epidemic prevention was even more careless.

At the same time, Taiwan is even lagging behind in vaccine preparation, and after the outbreak of the epidemic in the country, Taiwan has only 100,000 doses left, which is completely unable to meet social needs.

Therefore, in the latest poll released by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, Tsai Ing-wen's reputation value is 45.7%, a record low in 21 months.

Doing a good job in the people's livelihood and internal affairs is the fundamental governance

The "governing dilemma" of the Tsai Ing-wen government reflects that democratic politics cannot have only political issues.

When Tsai Ing-wen was re-election, he weakened the economic, social, and people's livelihood issues in Hong Kong's anti-amendment case, highlighted the failure of "one country, two systems," and won a wide range of votes.

Nowadays, the Tsai Ing-wen government "successfully fails, and fails also fails." Because of its improper handling of economic and people's livelihood issues in its internal affairs, it has fallen into a dilemma of plummeting satisfaction.

This shows that the protection of freedom and democracy is not only a political slogan, but also a comprehensive discussion covering economic policies, social welfare, and resource allocation.

This has also taught Hong Kong society a valuable lesson.

In the past year or two, Hong Kong society has also fallen into a trend of excessive politicization. Whether it is district council elections, vaccines, daily consumption, etc., they have all evolved into a political statement.

Both the Hong Kong society and the government should learn from the experience of Taiwanese society. Instead of letting politics dominate everything, they should also take into account the advancement of the economy and people's livelihood.
