Was the math school in Bavaria really that difficult? That's what students say

A petition advocates a "fair evaluation" of maths Abitur tasks.

They were especially difficult this year, say the students.

But is that true?

Kirchheim

- Actually, every graduate class is of the opinion that the questions were particularly difficult this year of all times.

So this year too, especially the math exercises angered the students.

An online petition for a “fair evaluation” of the work has already been signed by 31,000 supporters.

But was the math graduation really that difficult?

We asked around.

Korbinian Harlander and Frederik Jurina (both 17) go to the Kirchheimer Gymnasium. "We are the first year that had to work for almost the entire twelfth school year because of Corona at home," says Jurina. With the classmates who graduated in 2020, the preparation was practically already around when the virus was rampant. “So many of us expected a fairer question,” says Jurina, who has “around 14 points” in maths, a one. Harlander is on a good two, eleven points. So neither of them have any problems with curve discussions, statistics and the like. And the Abitur tasks were also solvable, none were really mean. "But it was about the questions and assumptions, from my point of view that was all unnecessarily complicated", criticizes Jurina."It often took a long time to understand the question at all."

"The Ministry of Culture has never reacted to the wishes of the students"

Both students are of the opinion that a high school diploma can be quite difficult, they don't want their grades to be thrown up. "But in view of our situation, in which we really had to work out almost everything ourselves, we would have hoped for other tasks," says Harlander. Some of the classmates, adds Jurina, had big problems with the tasks that had to be thought around the corner. Her teachers were also appalled by the assignments, says Harlander. In contrast to Jurina, he therefore signed the petition to Minister of Education Michael Piazolo, which the Munich tutor Bettina Cornean initiated immediately after the Abitur exams. For Cornean, especially in mathematics, the standard in Bavaria is higher than in any other federal state. This discrepancy was exacerbated by the pandemic. The pupils' hope for a fair mathematics test would have been dashed, now one is at least hoping for a fair assessment.

Will the petition help?

Jurina has doubts: "I think it is absolutely appropriate, but the Ministry of Culture has never reacted to the wishes and concerns of the students and will not do so this time either."
