The decentralization decided by François Mitterrand has irrigated the administrative machinery of the country with elective democracy.
It has helped to unite citizens around local commitments and to increase, through their control, the effectiveness of public action.
However, it is important not to confuse the legitimate aspiration to local freedoms with the identity reflex.
After the creation of the Single Collectivity of Corsica and of the European Collectivity of Alsace, we fear that future bills, under the guise of decentralization, will lead to a France of regional communities each having its “hand-sewn” status.
