Shock for Sukothai owner Thomas Duschl: His beer garden is a building site.

The city building authority began to renovate the Floriansbrunnen on Pfarrplatz - regardless of the restaurant's beer garden.

But Lord Mayor Florian Hartmann pulls the emergency brake.

Dachau

- When Thomas Duschl looked through the window of his Sukothai restaurant on Tuesday lunchtime, he thought he was not seeing right: In the middle of his beer garden on the parish square in Dachau's old town was an excavator. The umbrellas he had set up a few days ago were folded up on the floor. The paving stones had been torn up around the Florian fountain, and a deep ditch ran around the fountain.

Duschl was horrified.

He actually wanted to open his beer garden at the weekend, the tables and chairs are ready.

From March to October he rented the space for his outdoor catering.

His Thai restaurant on Wieningerstraße has been closed for more than half a year due to the Corona lockdown.

With the warmer temperatures and falling incidence values, the opening of at least the beer garden was now in the immediate vicinity.

“I was already in such a spirit of optimism and joy that it started again,” says the restaurant operator.

But now it looked as if he would be thwarted again - from the construction site on the parish square, about which he had just not known anything.

"I don't understand why no one talked to me about it."

Thomas Duschl picked up the phone.

When asked, the city of Dachau explained what the construction site was all about: The well is to be renovated.

According to Kurt Ladehof, head of the urban green and urban building yard, the drainage of the well is defective.

Construction yard employees showed little understanding

However, the employees of the building yard showed little understanding for Duschl's predicament.

The hole was already there, and no one knew that he wanted to open his beer garden now, of all times: With these answers, Duschl was fobbed off on the phone.

“The well has been dry for two years,” says Duschl.

"For me this is pure malice." He had existed fears all night long.

Because as soon as the competition opens the beer gardens, the to-go business would no longer do well.

Together with the already planned two-week vacation, Duschl feared that she would have no income for five weeks.

Lord Mayor Florian Hartmann apologizes

Finally, Duschl used social media as the “last resort”: On Tuesday afternoon, he made people aware of his plight on Facebook - with success. Yesterday, Duschl received an apology from the highest authority. In a phone call, Lord Mayor Florian Hartmann told him that he hadn't known anything about the construction site either, and expressed his understanding for Duschl's situation. “You can't just do something like this without discussing it beforehand,” says Hartmann, who sharply criticizes the approach taken by the municipal building yard. Hartmann, who is himself a regular customer at Sukothai and places great value on the good relationship between the city and the Asian restaurant, has already rightly rebuked the employee and stopped the renovation. “We don't want to disrupt the beer garden,” assures Hartmann. The construction work would only resume after the beer garden season.

Thomas Duschl is now relieved. In the end, everything turned out well for the Sukothai. The restaurant owner is “very grateful” for the “unbureaucratic help” from the mayor. On Wednesday, June 2nd, Sukothai will start the beer garden season.
