Steve Greig shares his Denver home with a veritable zoo.

When his beloved dog died in 2013, he started an unusual project to deal with grief.

Denver - He doesn't sing or act, he's neither a model, a painter, nor a politician, and yet Steve Greig's Instagram account has over 1 million followers.

The 57-year-old American is an accountant and describes himself only as an

animal lover

, which in his case is a sympathetic understatement.

Rather, he is a patron of the outcast fur noses, because Steve Greig saves old and sick dogs that no one wants anymore from lethal injection - and enables them to spend a dignified retirement under the roof of his Denver house.

Steve Greig has been documenting his life with his four-legged friends on Instagram for five years now.

He has already uploaded more than 1,250 photos there - pictures of pure happiness in life that show gratitude and exude charity.

A pleasant change for the eyes and mind, in an environment in which mostly narcissists with banalities ask for attention.

More than a million people are enthusiastic about Greig's animal household, which not only includes dogs, but also a domestic pig, a chicken, a turkey and two rabbits.

The death of his dog gives Steve Greig an idea

The fact that Greig has had a kind of Noah's Ark for 8 years has to do with the loss of his beloved dog * Wolfgang.

He and the Miniature Pinscher romped through life side by side for twelve years until his “best friend” was hit by a car in 2013 and the injuries did not survive.

Steve Greig felt as if the ground had been torn from under his feet, but after several months of grief, he decided to look forward again and "make sense" of Wolfgang's death.

Eventually Greig decided to adopt dogs that no one wanted anymore.

Older, frail dogs, sick dogs, "dogs that are always overlooked, but which still have so much life to give", writes Greig on his Instagram account "wolfgang2242", which he named after his late Miniature Pinscher.

First, Eeyore moved in with him.

A 12 year old Chihuahua with four sick knees and a heart defect.

"He was the oldest and the sickest dog in the shelter," Greig told today.com.

Those who give old dogs a loving home will be rewarded

Under Greig's care, the Chihuahua spent seven more beautiful years before he closed his eyes forever in 2020 due to age.

At this point in time, Greig's house had long since developed into a senior animal residence *.

Ten dogs in need are currently enjoying his care.

With his commitment, the animal lover wants to draw attention to the fact that older animals are also ideally suited as pets.

"These dogs are overlooked in animal shelters and they have so much light and love in them," Greig reports from experience.

"It's just incredibly rewarding."

Of course, many animals also do a lot of work.

Greig's day usually starts at 5 a.m.

"Before I go to work, I prepare the food and the necessary medicine for the dogs," he tells today.com.

"Twice a week I even dedicate my lunch break to the dogs and come home for an extra hour."

The rest of the time, the dog sitter Michele takes care of the four-legged friends.

"It wouldn't work without her," said Greg about his helper, who loves animals just as much as he does.

Hats off for this commitment.
