The P + R facility at the Freising train station is to be redesigned.

The city councils have now given the go-ahead for the first improvements.

Freising

- The P + R facility at the train station on the Lerchenfeld side is not exactly a gem and also does not support the goal of the city of Freising to increase the proportion of bus, bicycle and foot traffic to 65 percent by 2035.

In the long term, the “station structure concept”, which is currently being developed by the city planning office, should help here - including parking decks, small-scale businesses, housing and bus tunnels.

But because the federal government's Bike + Ride (B + R) offensive currently enables generous funding, the city now wants to implement the first measures in the short term to improve the situation.

However, they must not endanger or impair the later major solution.

The planning committee has now approved these quickly implementable projects.

Plant getting on in years

In detail, this means: On the inner city side of the station, the situation and the attractiveness for cyclists have already been significantly improved with the double-decker parking system, which is also funded by the B + R offensive.

On the other side of the tracks, however, the situation was "to be assessed as rather bad," said the planning committee.

The system is getting on in years and is often over 100 percent full.

According to MVV estimates, around 600 bicycle parking spaces would be needed there, which would mean an expansion of 250.

The solution: double-decker parking, plus a new covered storage area for cargo bikes and trailers.

Parking spaces will be converted into bus stops

There is also a need for action for the buses: With 1150 passengers per day, this stop is the second largest in the Freising city bus system. Nevertheless, the situation does not meet the requirements. A problem-free alighting along the curb is not possible, in addition, the insufficient space prevents the municipal utilities from making the lines 622 and 624 a cycle reduction to ten minutes. If there were more buses, there would be a backlog.

The solution: The parking spaces on the other side of the street from the bicycle parking facilities are to be converted into four bus stops - in the so-called sawtooth arrangement. In addition, there is the place where the bus has stopped up to now as a necessary stop. If this variant were to be implemented, the municipal utilities emphasized that the clock would definitely be compressed. Of course, the car parking spaces that are now drawn on the opposite side of the street from the bicycle parking facility would be omitted: this would be 22, which corresponds to 1.6 percent of the parking spaces currently available on the P + R area.

But both administration and MVV as well as city councils were of the opinion that this loss would be cushioned and absorbed by the improvements for bicycles and buses.

Robert Weller (FW) congratulated on the planning because the situation for the buses of the municipal utilities and the users was actually "an imposition".

Emilia Kirner (ÖDP) repeated what she had often stated when it came to improvements for public transport and cyclists: "I'm glad that something is finally happening."

The costs

If this draft plan, which the Freising City Councils have approved for further processing, is realized, the improvements will not be free: the redesign of the areas for the four new bus stops will cost 320,000 euros, the new bicycle parking facility around 220,000 euros.

This is where the federal government comes into play, through whose grants the municipality only has a contribution of 11,000 to 33,000 euros.

In addition, there are planning costs of around 30,000 euros.
