2 Last Tuesday, 95 students from the rural school of Mactumactzá in Chiapas were arrested when they were protesting on a highway in Chiapas, which sparked outrage among the students of the country's normal schools.

3 The normals have been at the center of the controversy and are already a sad symbol of human rights violations since in 2014 a group of 43 students were disappeared in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, after participating in the seizure of several buses in the Iguala town.

4The scandalous detention of the students last Tuesday came amidst beatings and abuse widely disseminated on social media.

The normalistas demanded a face-to-face entrance exam to that school despite the pandemic situation because most of the applicants are indigenous people who do not have internet access.

6 The outrage over the detention of the young people was also seen outside the El Amate prison, in Chiapas, where 19 normalistas are still being held.

7Families of the normalistas demanded the release of the students in the municipality of Cintalapa.

This Sunday, the United Nations Human Rights Office in Mexico expressed its "concern" about the situation and demanded a "serious investigation" into the allegations of police abuse.

8For many, accessing a school like the normal rural school ensures, in addition to training, shelter and food.

In 2020 only 20% of the applicants who applied to enter Mactumactzá achieved access, hence the protests these days.
