But the cheerful 97-year-old does not let Corona get her down.

- “You shouldn't let negative thoughts get in touch with you in such crises.” Magdalena Schreiber, then 96, gave this tip in an FT interview a year ago.

Nevertheless, the corona pandemic hit her very hard, as the enterprising senior citizen suddenly had very limited contact with her beloved family.

For a long time, Magdalena Schreiber had to be content with photos and videos via WhatsApp and calls from her loved ones.

But with daughter Brigitta and son-in-law Thomas Wendt, in whose house the elderly woman lives, she was never alone and always well looked after.

“You have to stock up on work so that you don't get cloudy thoughts,” she says.

And she found enough work in her own garden during the lockdown, and passed the time washing and ironing. Magdalena Schreiber usually also enjoys going on trips and trips. For example, three years ago the whole family went to Egypt, where she drank the first cappuccino of her life. Because "Uri", as the great-grandmother is affectionately known, is no longer quite as good on foot, her daughter Anne gave her a small e-mobile in the spring, with which she has been making the arduous journey to the garden at a speed of eight km / h.

On Whit Monday, Magdalena Schreiber celebrated her 97th birthday - already her second day of honor in Corona times.

This time there was a very special surprise for the senior citizen: For the first time, she was able to hold her 13th and youngest great-grandchild Luca in her arms.

“Grandma was very happy,” reports son-in-law Thomas Wendt.

In general, every further opening step is a great joy for his mother-in-law, who likes to be in the company of other people.

"She can no longer hear the word Corona." In the meantime, the "Schreiber-grandma" has been vaccinated for the second time, so that she no longer has to be afraid of an infection.

Magdalena Schreiber is shocked by the many deaths that the pandemic has caused so far.

"We have to be grateful to God and medicine that Corona spared our family," she says.

The day before her birthday, she was very happy when Brigitta and Thomas Wendt surprised her with a trip to Nymphenburg.

A gondola ride on the Nymphenburg Canal was on the program there: this unforgettable experience was organized for her by her son-in-law, who comes from the Baltic Sea coast and has lived on Rügen for many years.

This day consoled the jubilarian about the fact that it was the second birthday in a row that she couldn't gather her entire family, not all of her neighbors and friends.

Even today she longingly remembers her 95th birthday, when people came by all day to congratulate her and she herself tapped a keg of beer on her special day.
