Elderly people living alone have frequent home accidents, accidentally falling or no one knows.

Tian Shui Wai Wanjun Pak Qiu College’s "All Girls Class" secondary school students teamed up to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) device that automatically monitors the fainting of the elderly at home, "rescue in time". When the elderly falls at home, they will sound an alarm and voice inquiry. When the alarm is turned off, the microcomputer will automatically send a message to the family member requesting rescue.

The concept of research and development started by the girl Tai Gong

The R&D team consists of four Form 4 girls from Wanjun Boqiu College. They started to get in touch with artificial intelligence (AI) from extracurricular activities in Form 2, and they have begun to conceive of "saving in time" in Form 3.

The concept originated from one of the members, Zhong Zhuolin. Her grandfather was an elderly living alone, and her family worried that he could not take care of himself. If he accidentally fell or failed to rescue in time, she hoped to develop a system that could automatically detect whether an accident happened to the elderly.

It took five months from the research to the field test.

This AI image recognition technology device includes a miniature camera, a siren, and a miniature computer. When the elder falls at home, the system will immediately send a signal to try to wake the elder, asking "Are you anything? Can you get up? Do you need to contact your family?" In case the elderly lose consciousness and fail to turn off the wake-up function within the set time, the system will immediately send a message to notify the family members. The cost of a device is about 1,500 yuan.

To test the home environment of three elderly living alone

With the assistance of a social worker, the students visited three elderly people living alone in Tin Ching Village, and tested "Timely Rescue" in their home environment.

One of the mother-in-laws revealed that she had fallen down at home and failed to press the safety bell for help. Fortunately, her neighbor was rescued when she found out.

Hu Mina, one of the members, said that even if there is an infrared thermal sensor alarm system or a gravity sensor device in the market to detect whether the elderly has not moved for a period of time, they may be misled by hot meals or heavy objects and cannot distinguish human bodies or objects. , Or misjudged someone fainted.

Frustration inspires research "Rescue Time 2.0" to increase night vision

Speaking of unforgettable experiences, Zhong Zhuolin said that Zoom should also be used in competitions under the epidemic, because she is worried about poor reception, and the judges cannot hear clearly or affect the score.

Hu Mina also said that in the field test in the elderly's home, it was discovered that their living environment was dark and the device could not be identified because it had no night vision function.

This group of girls was frustrated and failed to repel, and it inspired them to further develop "Rescue in Time 2.0", such as adding night vision, sending real-time photos, and cooperating with heartbeat monitoring devices. I believe the improved version is also suitable for nursing homes.

In addition, the current accuracy of the AI model is still not ideal, and more posture data such as sitting, standing, and lying down need to be collected. However, due to the epidemic, students can only ask their family members to help take photos of different postures, but only a few hundred are accumulated. Zhang.

They hope that the epidemic will slow down and invite more teachers and students to take pictures. The goal is to collect at least 5,000 copies so that the model can more accurately identify whether the elderly have fallen.

Teacher: Girls also study AI better than being careful and persistent

"Save in Time" won the HSBC Hong Kong Community Partnership Program "SMART Community Hackathon 2020" Excellence in Innovation and Technology Spirit Award. Leading this "all-women class" team is Lu Zhiheng, the chief director of the Information Technology and Innovation Development Department of Wanjun Boqiu College.

He said that there was a letter or punctuation error in the programming process, or the device could not be activated. Girls’ advantage is that they are more careful and good at finding mistakes; plus they are persistent enough to finish the online class in the morning and return to school in the afternoon to continue studying, even if the test is successful At 8 o'clock in the evening, there was no complaint.

Hu Meina said that she saw a pressure plate device in the second form of the game. The more people on the board, the faster the traffic light will turn green. This is an eye-opener and ignited interest in AI.

Zhong Zhuolin also said that she originally thought that AI was just a computer program, but later discovered that even if she didn't learn it, she could still use it to help more people in need. She thought it was a very happy thing.
