Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Olip on Thursday asked the international community to provide Nepal with nearly 40 million doses of anti-Covid-19 vaccines to fight a new wave of contamination that has put pressure on hospitals in this poor country.

"

We appeal to the international community to make vaccines available (...) We are ready to buy them if donations are not possible,

" the Prime Minister told reporters. This country of nearly 30 million inhabitants has so far received just over three million doses from different sources. “

It's difficult to receive small amounts (of vaccines) because double doses are needed. We therefore hope that vaccines will reach us in large quantities. We need to vaccinate around 20 million people, so we need 40 million doses,

”the Prime Minister stressed.

Nepal experienced an increase in contamination in early April which peaked in mid-May with more than 9,000 cases per day. The number of infections has started to decline slowly but the health system remains under pressure. "

We are not in a situation where we can say that (contaminations) are on the decline,

" said Sharma Oli.

Nepal started its vaccination campaign in January with one million doses of AstraZeneca supplied by India. But India, faced with a violent outbreak of the epidemic, had banned vaccine exports because it was itself in a shortage situation, a situation that has severely impacted other countries in the region. China gave Nepal 800,000 doses of Sinopharm while 348,000 doses of AstraZeneca were delivered to the country as part of the Covax program to help poor countries. According to media reports, 13 million doses are expected to be sent to Nepal through the Covax system. Beijing has promised another million doses.
