Almost four years ago, two Islamist attacks in Catalonia caused an international shock.
Three men have now been sentenced to long prison terms in connection with the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.
The two main defendants were sentenced to 53 years and six months and 46 years in prison, according to the Spanish State Court in Madrid.
The responsible criminal chamber pointed out, however, that the effective duration of the sentences for the two jihadists aged 24 and 32 would not exceed 20 years.
The third defendant (28) was sentenced to eight years in prison.
The attack in the summer of 2017 shook Spain: on the afternoon of August 17, a 22-year-old raced a delivery van into a crowd on the Las Ramblas in Barcelona.
14 people died and 118 were injured.
A German was also among the fatalities.
While on the run, the 22-year-old stabbed another victim.
On August 21st, he was shot dead by the police.
The IS claimed the act for itself
Shortly after the attack in Barcelona, five men drove a car into a group of passers-by in the seaside resort of Cambrils, around 100 kilometers southwest of Barcelona.
One woman died and seven other passers-by were injured.
The police shot the terrorists.
The militia "Islamic State" (IS) claimed the acts for themselves.
According to official information, the group had planned major attacks.
Their explosives store in a house in Alcanar 200 kilometers southwest of Barcelona blew up on August 16.
Since there were no more explosives, the group decided at short notice to attack with a delivery van in Barcelona.
The main defendants were found guilty of the terrorist organization and the manufacture of explosives, it said.
The third man bought material as an accomplice, among other things.
