The Celebrity Edge will be the first major cruise ship to set sail from the United States in more than a year, as COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease in the country.

The ship, part of the Celebrity Cruises line, owned by Royal Caribbean Group, was cleared to sail from Fort Lauderdale in June 2021.

“After months of working with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government officials, our Healthy Navigation Panel and industry partners, we are once again able to offer cruise lovers the opportunity to enjoy the wonders of cruise travel.

We are truly grateful to reach this special milestone, "said Richard D. Fain, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, in a press release.

The CDC has indicated that for cruise lines to sail in US waters again, they must complete "test" cruises to reproduce real-world cruise conditions or meet CDC vaccination requirements.

Celebrity Cruises has opted for the latter, which involves submitting a certification to the CDC stating “that 95% of the crew (excluding any newly quarantined crew) are fully vaccinated and submitting to the CDC a clear vaccination plan and specific and a schedule to limit cruise travel to 95% of passengers who have been verified by the cruise operator as fully vaccinated prior to sailing.

Celebrity's sister company Royal Caribbean recently announced plans to conduct its first test cruise in June.

This Celebrity cruise will depart from Port Everglades on June 26 and all crew and all passengers over the age of 16 must show proof that they have been fully vaccinated before boarding.

And that regulation will not disappear: after August 1, the vaccination rule will be expanded to include travelers over 12 years of age.

The ship accommodates nearly 3,000 guests.

A full cruise itinerary for her historic June voyage has yet to be announced.

The Celebrity Edge ship made its debut in 2018 and cost a billion dollars to build and outfit.

It was the first cruise liner to be designed with 3-D technology and its revolutionary 'endoskeleton' design, whereby most of the ship's mechanical characteristics are found along its spine, giving the exterior parts more light and visibility, was a first in the sector.

The cruise industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest Celebrity Edge cruise was completed in March 2020 and had an all-female crew in honor of International Women's Day.

Captain Kate McCue, who pilots the ship for much of the year, stayed on board with her team for nearly seven months before being cleared to return home.

"It was important to me to stay as long as possible to make sure that the 1,350 crew members we had at Celebrity Edge, and all the crew members we had in our fleet in the Caribbean, were able to get off, and off," he said. told CNN Travel about the experience.

The United States is not the first country to relaunch cruise travel.

Earlier this month, MSC Cruises launched several short 'home holiday' itineraries in and around the UK.
