The Legislative Council passed the Bill on Reforming the Electoral System through its third reading yesterday. However, the method for selecting election committees for individual sub-sectors has yet to be finalized.

Among them, the religious circles occupying 60 seats on the election committee, each of the six major religious groups nominates 10 people for the election committee.

It is understood that the Hong Kong Christian Council tends to continue to select committee members by drawing lots, but all of them are changed to "group votes."

As for the specific method of drawing lots, the news stated that the 6 founding groups of the Christian Council, including the Lutheran Church and the Anglican Church, will divide 3 of them by drawing lots, and the 3 groups that have not been drawn can be held for the next session. The election committee "rotates" as a representative to reflect the principle of fairness.

The six major churches take turns as election committees

The next election committee will increase to five major sectors with a total of 1,500 people. The religious sector belonging to the third sector will follow the previous arrangement and occupy 60 seats. It is composed of the Christian Association, the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, the Chinese Islamic Fraternity Society, the Taoist Federation, The Confucius Institute and the Buddhist Federation each nominate 10 people to be selected as committee members.

Among the six major religions, the Christian Council has the most fierce competition. In the last session, the Council abandoned "universal suffrage within the church" and instead elected committee members by lottery, including the acceptance of ordinary members to participate in their own names, church meetings, and sectarian nomination Etc. At that time, as many as 580 Christians were "individually nominated" to become election committees.

However, after the major restructuring of the elections, it is reported that the Christian Council also plans to delete "individual votes" and nominate them from more than 20 organizations.

It is understood that the 10 Christian Election Committee will be divided into two parts, of which 3 seats will be drawn by the 6 founding members of the Association, namely, the Hong Kong Conference of the Church of Christ in China, the Hong Kong Lutheran Church, the Hong Kong and Macau Diocese of the Anglican Church, and the Methodist United The church, the Salvation Army, and the Chinese YMCA, the first three organizations "successful" will become the new election committee, but they cannot be re-elected in the next election committee. At that time, their seats must be "transferred" to the remaining three churches. Reflect the principle of fairness and equal opportunity participation.

As for the remaining 7 electoral committee seats, they were drawn by more than 10 churches or Christian organizations, including Hong Kong Chongzhen Church, Hong Kong Union Church, and Lutheran Theological Seminary.

It is understood that each church can nominate up to 5 representatives to participate in the lottery. Once someone fails to qualify for the election, they can make up at any time. However, only one person from each church can become an election committee member, and the chances of "winning the lot" are equal.

Some church members said that since the new election committee needs to pass the qualification review, it is safer to be nominated by the church's "group" election committee. Ordinary church members can only fight for their own churches if they want to be included in the election committee. The specific plan will be announced later.
