The Federal Statistical Office explains the situation.

Berlin / Munich - Anyone who drives their car regularly will have been annoyed time and again when driving to a gas station in the past few weeks: gasoline prices have increased enormously compared to the previous months.

An evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden shows how drastically the fuel costs at the nation's petrol pumps have recently increased: In April 2021, Germany's car drivers had to pay around a quarter (plus 24.8 percent) more for premium gasoline than in the same month of the previous year .

Prices for petrol and diesel are rising significantly - energy costs are around 20 percent more expensive

The diesel price has also increased noticeably - the increase compared to the same month last year is just under a fifth - 19.5 percent.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) also increased, with inflation here being 14.2 percent.

With an increase of 23.3 percent, the price of fuels rose to a particularly high degree - overall, consumer prices rose by 2.0 percent between April 2020 and April 2021.

The unpleasant development can therefore also be felt in heating costs.

Petrol price: Drivers experience price shock - several causes responsible

The price shock for drivers at the petrol stations has several causes: The Federal Office names the main factors: the effects of the corona crisis and the CO2 levy decided by politicians, which would have increased the price of petrol and diesel since the beginning of the year.

Another point is the end of temporary VAT at the end of 2020.

It comes as no surprise that the price increases are coming: It has been apparent for some time that the costs for consumers would increase after the Corona crisis.

However, the fact that prices in the energy sector are rising so quickly within a short period of time should come as a surprise to most citizens.

The head of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy recently explained how dangerous rising inflation is for the German economy.
