Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that Japan will extend the state of emergency to nine prefectures until June 20, about a month before the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Suga said that despite the decline in the number of COVID-19 infections in Osaka and Tokyo, cases remain at high levels and Osaka hospitals are under pressure.
What could happen if the Tokyo Olympics are canceled?
"The infection is decreasing these days, however the situation is still unpredictable," said the prime minister.
"Considering these situations, I have decided to extend the statement," Suga added.
