Anyone who not only drives through Grünwald, but also feels a certain bond with the place, will be very happy that the Grünwalder Einkehr will be retained in its current form.

This piece of local history has already seen turbulent times.

Grünwald

- The community has made every effort and successfully to achieve ensemble protection at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection.

The Monument Council has now decided in this regard.

The only chance the congregation had to obtain protection here was to establish a connection between the Holy Blood Chapel opposite and the contemplation.

The chapel is the only building that has been preserved from the former Schwaige in Geiselgasteig, as Wolfgang Kuny writes in the association magazine of the Friends of Grünwald in August 2020 in an article entitled "Suggestion for a Sunday excursion into the Isar valley in 1901".

Tenant Balthasar Ranckhenpacher built it in 1627 as thanks for his healing from a serious illness.

Even today it seems to bring good luck for the place and its residents by protecting the entrance to the town from heavily changing buildings.

The restaurant was opened in 1881

One of the Schwaigen who lined the hunting area of the Wittelsbach dukes on the high bank of the Isar was located here as early as the 15th century. What follows is a turbulent history of the estate owned by the nobility, who in the 19th century can no longer hold the estate. As Wolfgang Kuny further reports, the Schwaige was sold to the Munich wine merchant Anton Bader in 1828, and in the period that followed, the appearance and use changed significantly. “The owners changed often.” Real estate speculation ensued. It became interesting in the period of industrialization, around 1870, when the royal Bavarian major Camille Graf von Seyssel d'Aix acquired the property on the banks of the Isar. In the long run, the count kept an eye on the excursion traffic into the Isar valley: his restaurant "Zur Einkehr" was opened in 1881: with a wheat beer brewery,Guest rooms and a bowling alley. As stated in the first volume of the Grünwalder Chronik, the other buildings have been separated from this complex. Recently, the Einkehr hull piece has been adapted to the modern demands of gastronomy with a major change in the interior, the demolition of the Salettl and a new building in the same place.

Grünwald friends are relieved

For the friends of Grünwald, the preservation of the Geiselgasteig ensemble guaranteed by the monument protection is a reason to be happy. Years ago you campaigned for the state-owned Grünwald Castle to be preserved. First and foremost, the deceased home guardian and honorary citizen Hans Waldhauser should be mentioned, who would certainly have been happy about the new development. The chairman of the association, Thomas Lindbüchl, no longer believed that the retreat would be received. But now he said: “I am maximally pleased.” Because after the castle, this square is an important part of Grünwald's history and memory. A little more than ten years ago, he already felt that the renovation of the Einkehr was a terrible intervention that had to be accepted.

Now the friends of Grünwald hope that constructive talks will be held with the new owner of the Einkehr about its future use.

Lindbüchl's fear: There could be apartments on the current parking lot.

But according to the municipal council resolution, there is a lock on changes plus a development plan.

It is a matter of preserving the remainder of the former contemplation in its local form.
