Tourism should revive as early as next month.

"We achieved herd immunity today," said Malta's Health Minister Chris Fearne at a recent press conference.

The island state was

the first EU country to vaccinate 70 percent of the adult population with at least one dose of a corona vaccine

.

According to a report by the German Press Agency, more than 475,000 vaccine doses were administered to the approximately 500,000 residents.

Almost 42 percent of those over 16 have been vaccinated, and 95 percent of those over 60 are already vaccinated.

The number of new corona infections has fallen sharply in recent months.

Summer vacation 2021: Malta opens to tourists on June 1st

Malta has been planning to restart tourism for a long time: it should be ready next month. "We are ready to

welcome tourists to the Maltese islands again from June 1st,

" said tourism boss Johann Buttigieg in a press release. For a nicer holiday feeling, the mask requirement on beaches and pools should be dispensed with, and courses are again allowed to take place at English language schools. Further easing steps are planned from June 7th: restaurants will then be allowed to allow six people per table and groups of up to six people will be allowed to meet in public. Bars and clubs may reopen under certain conditions. From July 7th, the

mask requirement for fully vaccinated people will no longer be required

as long as they are alone or with other fully vaccinated people.

However, mouth and nose protection remains mandatory in groups of more than two people and in institutions.
