Geneva - Sana
Today, the World Health Assembly, at its seventy-fourth session, unanimously elected Syria to the Executive Board of the World Health Organization, represented by the Eastern Mediterranean Region, for a period of three years.
The Executive Council of the Organization is the executive body whose functions include ensuring the implementation of the decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly, providing advice and recommending draft decisions to the Assembly for approval, in addition to providing the WHO Secretariat with instructions and directives.
The Council's terms of reference include considering nominations for the Director-General, appointing regional directors, in agreement with the regional commissions, and studying the WHO program budget.
Supervising the election of the Director General and approving the organization’s reform plans are the most important issues on the council’s agenda during Syria’s membership.
The Executive Council is one of the three bodies that make up the World Health Organization, along with the General Secretariat and the World Health Assembly, and it consists of 34 members with technical qualifications in the field of health. Each member is named by one of the member states elected for this purpose by the World Health Assembly.
It is noteworthy that the work of the 74th session of the World Health Assembly, which is held virtually, began with the participation of Syria on the 24th of this May and continues until the first of next June and is held virtually.
