Berlin-SANA
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced his intention to run for a second presidential term next year.
"I would like to run for the presidency for a second term," Steinmeier said at a news conference today, Reuters quoted Steinmeier as saying.
Steinmeier, who is from the Social Democrats and a former foreign minister, was appointed as president under Angela Merkel's previous coalition government between his party and the conservatives, but the Social Democratic Party ranks third in opinion polls, which means that it is unlikely to play a role in forming the next German government, and if that happens, Steinmeier will be approved. The German custom of respecting presidents remains in office.
The German president has little powers, but he is usually a top politician.
