The municipality of the Buenos Aires town of Castelli is promoting a program to lower the price of 6 cuts of meat by up to 50% through an agreement between producers, the local refrigerator and butchers.

"We must take care of the producer and the working people and put an end to the intermediaries that make them more expensive and create prices," said Mayor

Francisco Echarren,

amid the controversy that sparked the closure of meat exports for 30 days with the aim of lowering meat prices.

The extension of the agreement will be for 90 days and they will offer the roast, wide steak, narrow steak, buttock, needle and minced meat at 399 pesos per kilo.

Thus, the discount in the barbecue reaches 46% (it costs 750 pesos) while in the rest of the cuts it reaches between 20% and 30%.

The program will start with 8 butcher shops and 17 more will be added next week, representing 90% of the total number of butcher shops in the district.

"

We want to pay the producer the same as what he sells to anyone

. It is not that we are going to pay him less. We are going to pay him per kilo whatever the market price says. We are not going to harm him and ask for any effort. We understand that the Producer risks and invests, "he said given the uncertainty of livestock producers.

In this sense, he explained that the refrigerator will earn a little less since it will take care of the transfer and the butchers will also earn less in the 6 cuts they offer.

"What we do

eliminate is the cost of intermediation

. We do it with local logistics," he remarked.

It should be remembered that Echarren sent a project to the Deliberative Council in 2020, which ended up being approved, for

agricultural producers to contribute on a mandatory basis

to an extraordinary fund for the only time in order to raise funds to face the coronavirus.

The president of the local Rural Society,

Alejandro Jaureguiberry

, said that at the moment he is not internalized about the program that the municipality of Castelli will carry out.

"The rural society was not informed of anything, the only thing we know is from rumors. I understand that there would be no producers from the district," said the head of the entity.

"We are not in favor of state intervention, which proves to be ineffective in these actions, we have seen it with the vaccine," he added.
