An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu today, without any reports of injuries or damage.

"The quake was recorded at a depth of 20 kilometers and 201 kilometers northeast of Sheba, which is home to about 919,000 people," media quoted the Euro-Mediterranean Seismology Center as saying.

No tsunami risk was reported from the tremor.

An earthquake measuring 5.2 degrees on the Richter scale hit the south of the Japanese island of Kyushu, southwest of the country, last April.
