Munich - During the corona pandemic, the patience of many people was repeatedly tested.

To this day, the population in Germany has to cope with impairments.

For politics it was said: keep calm, even if the resentment grows among some.

Vaccinations are a central component in the fight against the coronavirus.

However, there is still a lack of sufficient vaccines.

Nevertheless, the federal and state governments rushed to the latest vaccination summit.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers decided to offer vaccinations to young people aged twelve and over from June 7th.

The federal government and the state leaders opposed the Standing Vaccination Commission of the Robert Koch Institute (Stiko).

Corona vaccination offer for children over 12 years of age is coming - the federal and state governments are losing patience with Stiko

Has politics lost patience with its advisory body? At least Merkel and her colleagues oppose the Stiko with the vaccination offer for over 12-year-olds. This currently does not want to commit itself to a vaccination recommendation for children, in the opinion of Stiko boss Thomas Mertens and his colleagues, the necessary data is still lacking. In addition, the Stiko was considering making a corresponding vaccination recommendation only for previously ill children of this age group.

In the end, it seemed as if Merkel and the country leaders were taking too long to make the decision-making process at Stiko. Health Minister Spahn publicly criticized the committee's failure to recommend vaccinations for over 12-year-olds. SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach had also asked Stiko to issue “a message” announcing an imminent vaccination recommendation for this age group. This did not happen, the Stiko prefers to rely on current and reliable studies as well as medical decision-making criteria. And apparently alienates the political decision-makers with this strategy.

In the past few weeks, things have often not happened quickly enough for them.

Stiko always worked carefully, but it was mostly time-consuming.

At the same time, politicians had to look at how to get the growing impatience of the population under control.

The ethics council also chose a different path than the Stiko.

Its chairman, Alena Buyx, advocated the vaccination recommendation for over 12-year-olds: "The strongest argument to vaccinate 12 to 15-year-olds is simply that they naturally want protection themselves." And thus went into opposition to Stiko .

Stiko: Committee is losing influence - is the approaching federal election as a reason?

Originally, the Ethics Council and Stiko had spoken with one voice, but now both bodies are taking different directions.

The verdict of the Standing Vaccination Commission of the Robert Koch Institute is apparently no longer in demand as a last resort.

The upcoming federal election in 2021 may also play a role here.

Dissatisfaction among potential voters with children of the appropriate age could grow.

If there is still no vaccination offer for their offspring, this is likely to have an impact on the voting decision of these people.

The federal government has now created facts.

Whether these can appease the electorate will certainly also depend on how quickly the planned vaccination offer for children and adolescents is put into practice.
