After the illegal assembly case on National Day last year was sentenced yesterday (28th), the office of the presiding judge Hu Yawen received at least three suspicious calls, including insults and threatening remarks.

The Bar Association issued a statement today (29th) in which it strongly condemned the intimidation in the harshest terms.

The Association stated that judges must perform their judicial duties without any interference, threaten judicial personnel, attempt to put pressure on judges or influence judges' rulings, all of which seriously impact judicial independence.

Such behaviors not only interfere with the operation of justice, but also damage the rule of law in Hong Kong, emphasizing that in a society under the rule of law, the above behaviors must never be tolerated and must be stopped immediately.

Peng Yunxi, President of the Law Society, also strongly condemned the intimidation of judicial personnel, emphasizing that intimidation of judicial personnel is not only a serious criminal offence, but also poses an intolerable threat to the rule of law and judicial independence.

She called on law enforcement agencies to investigate thoroughly immediately and bring the perpetrators to justice.
