The Belarusian episode is an outrage against Europe. First, because the hijacking targeted the plane of a European company, Ryanair, which linked Athens to Vilnius, two European capitals. Then (and above all) because the person arrested, the dissident journalist Roman Protassevich, had obtained political asylum in Poland, a European country. Finally, because faced with our requests for explanations, the autocratic president Alexander Lukashenko was satisfied with indigent explanations (the pseudo “bomb threat” received from Bern, the fortuitous “discovery” of the opponent among the passengers of the flight... ). This crisis once again reveals the weakness of Europe, "
a club for times of peace
", as Philippe Gélie underlined in his last letter.
The only concrete retaliatory measure at this stage: the closure of European airspace to Belarusian planes and the recommendation that airlines avoid Minsk airspace.
