From July there will be a change in the long-distance trains of Deutsche Bahn.
It is a step towards more sustainability.
Berlin - Deutsche Bahn wants to produce less plastic waste and process waste better.
From June, the plastic cutlery for take-away meals in the on-board catering of the long-distance trains will be replaced by certified wooden cutlery.
The company announced on Sunday in Berlin that the railway was using a renewable raw material for around half a million cutlery per year.
At the same time, Deutsche Bahn wants to improve the waste separation and processing system with the aim of making 85 percent of the waste available as cleanly separated materials for recycling.
The previous separation system with around 6000 waste bins in the stations and long-distance trains will be simplified, it said.
Service providers then take care of sorting and recycling.
Deutsche Bahn wants to reduce plastic waste: Sustainable cutlery in long-distance trains
"Smart alternatives to plastic as well as improved recycling protect our planet and show responsibility towards future generations," said rail boss Richard Lutz.
"In the European Year of the Rails 2021, a new system of waste separation and disposal at DB is also a real step on the way to even more sustainability."
