Regional 2021: in Paca, Renaud Muselier on the tightrope

2021-06-02T11:33:33.899Z

The outgoing president (LR) hopes to forget the psychodrama linked to his agreement with the presidential majority. But he turned his back on one

Within the Republicans party, it is quite rare that everyone agrees on a subject.

The president (LR) of Paca, Renaud Muselier, will have had the merit of putting almost all of his family ... at odds with his strategy for regional elections.

His strategy?

Toper ostensibly with the presidential majority - the seal of the Prime Minister on this union as a bonus - and this, from the first round.

In the highest levels of the party, we are tearing our hair out. “Renaud was going to win! Sophie Cluzel

(Editor's note: leading minister LREM, before her withdrawal)

would have made her 12% in the first round, the pressure would have been such

(Editor's note: faced with the risk of RN victory)

that she would have withdrawn.

It is a trap of CM2, he fell into it, “grumbles at the top of the party.

All reproach him, while he is out, for not having believed in his strength, and for having been marabouted by Christian Estrosi and Hubert Falco, mayors of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) and Toulon (Var), defenders of an alliance with Macron.

“It's amazing to be outgoing and give up on being who you are.

From a tactical point of view, it is the best way to lose ”, deplores the mayor (LR) of Cannes David Lisnard, also hostile to this rapprochement.

"The RN has already won, it's over"

“The complicity displayed LR-LREM is much more deadly in Paca than elsewhere. It can be fatal to them, "recently confided a member of the National Rally, aware that part of the right-wing electorate would not understand such an alliance - even though Muselier prefers to speak of" an aggregation of talents "and denies any" alliance ”of parties. What is more: Marine Le Pen's party has rightly chosen to appoint a former UMP minister, Thierry Mariani, as head of the list to aspire as many right-wing votes as possible. Several polls published in May also give Mariani the winner in the second round regardless of the configuration. On the right, many now believe that the region is already lost. "The RN has already won, it's over," blows another president of the right-wing region.

Finished, really? At Muselier, we hope for the period of "storm" linked to the electoral agreement, behind them. "We have to get out of national issues and party issues," commented in the entourage of the former minister of Jacques Chirac. The person now wants to use the month that remains to him to bludgeon on his record - "to show concretely what he has done, especially during the health crisis, to embody his record" - without forgetting to distribute a few slaps to his main opponent - and yet a long-time friend - Thierry Mariani. “He is an itinerant, a deserter from political life in general, he does not finish what he begins. We do not even know if he will really give up his post as MEP, ”we joke in the Muselier camp.

The outgoing president must also secure the support of a majority of traditional right-wing voters.

Not won.

He recently split a letter to the 16,000 LR members of Paca to try to remind them that he was, despite everything, one of them.

And that alliance with LREM, there was hardly any question - despite the presence of some inserts and others close to the macronie on its lists.

But nothing will be simple: the deputy (LR) and boss of the first militant federation in France, Eric Ciotti, is at open war against Muselier, whom he accuses of treason.

Ciotti, whose local influence is strong, even made it known that he would not vote for Muselier.

He also suffers from a lack of notoriety, leading the region only since 2017 (it was Christian Estrosi who was elected in 2015), and will have only low reserves of votes in the second round.

And no one can say that the left will back down in its favor to counter the RN, as it did six years ago.

Faced with these headwinds, will Renaud Muselier still be carried by a winning mistral?
