Numerous young people attacked the police present, some of them with projectiles.
"Apparently there were bottles thrown in the direction of the emergency services there," said a police spokesman.
Several police officers were injured as a result.
Some of the young rioters were arrested.
As the Stuttgart police announced, up to 600 people had gathered on the outside staircase on Schlossplatz on Sunday night.
This had to be cleared the evening before due to existing corona rules.

On Saturday evening, the mood among the hundreds of young people gradually changed because the police made the celebrating crowd aware of the current alcohol ban and the Corona requirements.
This resulted in the first bottles being thrown in the direction of the police officers.
The officers then initiated the evacuation of the flight of stairs, and in response to this, further bottles flew out of the crowd of young people.
In addition, the police said they were verbally insulted.
There were violent clashes, the police used, among other things, pepper spray.
Six people were provisionally arrested but were later released.

In Stuttgart, for the first time, there have been no exit restrictions since last Thursday (May 27).
Before that, people had to be at home by 10 p.m.
Despite the recent easing, there is still a ban on alcohol in numerous public places in the city.
