Corona in Nuremberg: Incidence stagnates due to a mass outbreak in shared accommodation

Update from May 26, 10:40 a.m.:

While the seven-day incidence has fallen to below 50 in all of Bavaria, more precisely to 46, the value in Nuremberg is still just below 100. Today, Wednesday, the RKI reports a seven- Day incidence of 95.7.

Accordingly, 47 new cases were added and three more people died.

The fact that the incidence value is not falling any further, as in the rest of Bavaria, is due to a specific reason.

The city announced a massive outbreak of the corona virus in a shared accommodation.

A total of 52 cases and 36 contact persons were reported to the Nuremberg health department.

All those affected are currently in quarantine and series tests are also being carried out.

According to the city, the rest of the infection rate is declining.

In the intensive care units, the numbers continue to decline.

30 patients (-8) are currently being treated in intensive care, 65 people (+8) are in the normal ward.

Corona in Nuremberg: Clinic managers defend themselves against DIVI-Gate

First report

from May 25th:

Nuremberg - The corona numbers in Nuremberg * are declining. The trend showed before Pentecost. Now, however, the seven-day incidence seems to be stagnating somewhat. The value has always been below 100 in the last few days, but remains stable between 93 and 97. Today, Tuesday, the Robert Koch Institute reports a seven-day incidence * of 97 for the Franconian metropolis. 39 new cases have been added , 38 people (+1) are in the normal wards of the clinics and 57 in the intensive care units (as of May 21). This means that there are ten fewer patients than the day before.

The situation in the clinics is now easing, but that was not always the case.

Now intensive care physicians all over Germany have to grapple with allegations that the research team around the medical professor and health economist Matthias Schrappe wrote down in a thesis paper.

In it, they accuse the doctors, among other things, of the fact that intensive care medicine exaggerates the corona situation * and thus scares citizens.

Instead, they suspect fraud in the subsidies and manipulation by the clinics.

The group confirmed this with numbers.

The discussion was named DIVI-Gate (DIVI = German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine).

Corona in Nuremberg: those responsible in clinics angry about DIVI-Gate

Now those responsible from the Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen * clinics have reported and are angry.

As

reported by

Nordbayern.de

, the thesis paper is, according to the chairman of the Nuremberg Clinic, Achim Jockwig, "adventurous and absurd" as well as "insolence and bitter towards our employees".

The medical director and pandemic officer of the Fürth Clinic, Manfred Wagner, describes this as a "slap in the face".

Anger builds up in him when he reads something like this.

The Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen clinics clearly reject the allegations in the thesis paper of the medical professor Matthias Schrappe on the situation in the intensive care units.

In the meantime, however, it has been established that some of the numbers used to support the theses are incorrect.

The research group has therefore partially updated them.

Still, the anger remains.

“We would have been happy if so many patients had not needed intensive medical help, as the intensive care capacities for Covid patients and other patients who need a place in the intensive care unit after an operation, an accident, a heart attack or a stroke were sometimes very limited “, Says Jockwig to

Nordbayern.de.

Corona in Nuremberg: Numbers in the thesis paper were wrong

However, this is precisely what the authors of the thesis question doubt and again substantiated this with incorrect figures. In the first version of the thesis paper, they wrote that around 3,000 patients had to be treated in the intensive care unit in the first corona wave, in the updated version the research team speaks of around 6,000 patients. There was therefore no risk of overloading the intensive care units. As already mentioned, the numbers are incorrect and do not show the total number of ICU patients in the respective wave. Instead, it is the maximum number of corona patients who were treated in intensive care at the same time on the same day.

"Anyone who - like the authors - claims that the fear of scarce intensive care capacities or triage was unfounded has not experienced the tense situation, especially in our region," says the spokesman for the University Hospital Erlangen, Johannes Eissing, according to

Nordbayern.de.

"There were days when only one or two intensive care beds were freely available for life-threatening emergencies at the Erlangen University Hospital."

Corona in Nuremberg: clinics bought ventilators with subsidies

In their thesis paper, the researchers also accuse the hospitals of subsidy fraud. Manfred Wagner clearly rejects this. The Fürth * Clinic received a grant last spring and used it to purchase ventilators. The Nuremberg clinic did the same. "In March 2020 we saw the corpse vans drive through Bergamo in Italy and everyone was afraid that the same thing would happen to us," Wagner told

Nordbayern.de.

In order to be able to prepare for it, the capacities in Fürth have been massively increased accordingly. "Fortunately, the worst projections did not occur with us."
