ECOWAS suspends Mali from its institutions

The Economic Community of West African States, meeting this Sunday, decided on this sanction following the new coup d'état in the country. She calls on Mali to appoint a Prime Minister from civil society.


African presidents once again looked at the case of Mali on Sunday.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the regional body, held an exceptional summit in Ghana to try to find an acceptable solution to a new coup that rocked the country.

The leaders finally decided on Sunday to suspend Mali from their common institutions in response to the recent double coup by the Malian military.

After long discussions, the Heads of State and Government have decided to suspend Mali from the institutions of the ECOWAS (Community of West African States)

call for the immediate appointment of a Prime Minister from civil society

, ”according to the press release issued after their meeting.

Last Monday in Mali, the vice-president, Colonel Assimi Goïta, gave the order to arrest the president of the transition, Bah N'Daw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane.

The two men had chosen to "

resign

" two days later while they were still in the hands of the military coup.

Assimi Goïta then proclaimed himself president of the transition.

In an interview with the

, Emmanuel Macron, who had already, like the European Union, denounced "

an unacceptable coup

", showed his annoyance and warned Mali and ECOWAS. His country "

would not remain alongside a country where there is no longer democratic legitimacy or transition,

 " he threatened.
