Several thousand people demonstrated last Saturday in Peru against the candidate of the populist right Keiko Fujimori, to denounce the continuation in politics of the Fujimori clan. Pedro Castillo is given a large lead in the polls. The teacher won 18.92% of the vote against and 13.4% for Keiko Fujimori, in the first round of the presidential election on April 11, which had a record number of 18 candidates. Castillo is credited with 42% of the voting intentions, against 40% for Keiko Fujimori, according to an Ipsos poll published on Sunday, a week before the poll.

Peru, in recession due to the pandemic and politically unstable since 2016, will have to choose between two candidates located on the opposite side, between free market and nationalizations. The new president will take office on July 28, replacing interim president Francisco Sagasti.
