Geretsried - In order to improve the cycling infrastructure throughout Germany by 2030 and thus also climate protection, the federal government recently announced funding of 1.5 billion euros.

Reason enough for the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) to develop the “Mapathon” online workshop and to collect suggestions for the implementation of an optimal network of cycle paths.

The main focus of the ADFC district association is the city of Geretsried. There is currently the greatest need there. Due to the current construction work, the members see a good chance to implement measures promptly. This should succeed with the involvement of different interest groups such as city administration, schools, associations and the population.

In order to initiate the first steps, the ADFC members Hans Auer, Werner Grimmeiß, Josefine Hopfes, Claudia Redeker, Birgit Sachers and Klaus Wiedemann formed a so-called core team. The sextet first wants to analyze the cycling situation, taking into account shopping opportunities, work and leisure as well as residential and commercial areas, schools and sports facilities. In a further step, there is cooperation with an advisory board, which currently includes around 15 representatives from public life such as city councils and club representatives. After proposals for improvements to the cycle path network have been drawn up, these should be presented to the city council and, if necessary, further developed.

The core team cannot yet estimate the timeframe.

The first meetings are currently taking place via online video conferences due to corona.

The ADFC has great hopes for the “Geretsried Cycling Working Group”, some of which are also members of the advisory board.

Irrespective of this, the city of Geretsried is continuing to try to join the Working Group on Bicycle-Friendly Communities (AGFK).

“We want an optimal network of cycle paths,” says ADFC district board member Josefine Hopfes.
