David Goldschlager was laid to rest this week (Wednesday) in the Tel Regev cemetery near Haifa, after battling ALS for a long time.
In a chilling coincidence, exactly this week, 25 years ago, my uncle was seriously injured and survived one of the IDF's hard-fought clashes with Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, and has since struggled to recover. My uncle will accept him in his life. His relatives will accept him in his place.
"For me and for family and friends he is a real hero," says my uncle's brother, Oded Goldschlager.
He continued to fight with all his might.
"In this way, he is also fighting muscular dystrophy, which broke out in him three years ago and I am convinced that it is definitely related to his injury."

"There was also a mental injury and he never really managed to recover," the brother continues.
"He did not marry, build a family or leave children. He was accepted to study electrical engineering at the Technion and was unable to complete them. He found it difficult to tell what he went through, and chose not to reveal what he went through in his difficult confrontation with the Ministry of Defense."
Dudi Goldschlager was seriously wounded in a deadly battle, in which five IDF fighters, killed on June 10, 1996 (23 Sivan, 1956), were killed in the eastern sector of the security zone of southern Lebanon, near the "Pumpkin" post, in the ridge sector. Ali Taher, east of the town of Nabatieh.

Hezbollah terrorists opened fire at short range and from various directions on the force, throwing hand grenades, which exploded near the soldiers. Although surprised, the Nahal soldiers responded as expected, returned fire at the enemy and even killed one of the terrorists. In the severe battle that ensued, all 13 Nahal force soldiers were wounded, and five of them were killed: Lt. Yishai Schechter, Lt. Lior Ramon, Sgt. Idan Gabriel, Sgt. Eshel Amir Ben Moshe and Sgt. Yaniv Ruimi. My uncle (David) Goldschlager, who was the liaison of the force, was fatally wounded, operated on in the field and the medical staff managed to save his life.
"In the first fire of the encounter, my uncle and Yishai absorbed most of the fire," says Menachem Schechter, the brother of the team commander, Yishai Schechter, from Kedumim.
"My uncle was Yishai's contact from the training and the runway, and right on the day of the ambush, Yishai told Dudi that he wanted him to take an officers' course. When they were hit, my uncle's body received several bullets in the center and the radio on his back was shot. "He died, but the post doctor arrived on the scene and managed to save him with a complicated operation he performed on the spot. The signs of the injuries of the scenes and the spraying of the grenades were seen on his body for years, but in the end he recovered physically."
David Goldschlager did not receive him in his life.

"On the other hand," says Menachem, "the mental injury was unbearable. My uncle stayed at home most of his life and hardly left it, except for the reserves and memorials of his friends. His battle never ended. In recent years my uncle fell ill, and this week, according to the Hebrew calendar a day before "He turned 25 years old at the time of the collision in which he was injured. He died. For us, in fact, he was the sixth person killed in the collision."
"We knew he was suffering, and he once issued a second sentence on Lebanon, but no more than that," says Yuri, who lives in the apartment next to Goldschlager, in the residential building in Kiryat Motzkin where he lived last year, "it was understandable that it was not easy for him. I did not press."
Unlike the victims of the Israeli military operations, which are commemorated by the IDF, the Ministry of Defense, public associations and bodies that founded their loved ones, their heroism and adherence to the mission of IDF wounded, such as Dudi Goldschlager, is almost undocumented. Like him, IDF wounded "Many do not often talk about the battles that have changed their lives and do not want to be exposed to the spotlight.
