Gravel gardens are not politically correct at the moment.

Nevertheless, there was no majority in the municipal council for a ban requested by the SPD.

Icking

- Actually, Icking is a green community that defends its green spaces staunchly and makes sure that not too many of the open spaces that are not so abundant are sealed.

Nevertheless, the local council recently rejected an application by the SPD aimed at banning gravel gardens in the community.

A corresponding passage should be included in the existing open space statutes.

“Defend against the beginnings” - that was, said SPD chairwoman Beatrice Wagner after the meeting, the idea behind the motion.

“You don't always have to wait for something to happen.” The point is to make it clear that “gardens of horror”, in which nothing grows, are simply not possible between Irschenhausen and Dorfen.

A double safeguard does not seem necessary to the councils

Even if there was no one in the local council who professed gravel gardens - in the end only four members followed the SPD: two of the four Greens and two from the PWG.

There would be no gravel gardens in Icking at all, was one argument of those who voted against the proposal.

And, that was also explained at the meeting: Gravel gardens are prohibited by the Bavarian building code anyway.

Because the building regulations stipulate that all surfaces except those that are sealed must be able to absorb water.

This is often not the case with gravel gardens.

“Why”, asked Claudia Roederstein (UBI), “should we cover ourselves twice?”.

At the same time she made it clear: "Everyone is against gravel gardens and stone deserts."

Of course, there are not only gravel gardens and gardens without gravel.

There are simply a lot of gardens, says Beatrice Wagner, in which hardly anything grows that is far from diversity.

And which were then sealed in some areas - with stone, gravel, gravel and whatever.
