Is it possible to transfer asylum seekers and refugees to non-European countries?

THE VERIFICATION - The Danish parliament on Thursday passed a law that requires asylum seekers to apply in an African transit country. Is such an outsourcing possible for France?


THE QUESTION.

Denmark is approaching its goal of “zero asylum seekers” by adopting a law on Thursday 3 June allowing it to open centers for asylum seekers abroad. In other words, this new law will allow Denmark to move refugees to asylum centers in a partner country pending the processing of their case. No convention has yet been signed but several names of potential partner countries are circulating in the Danish press: Egypt, Eritrea and especially Rwanda. In April, Danish Immigration Minister Mattias Tesfaye signed diplomatic agreements on asylum and political issues with his Rwandan counterpart. Discussions were also initiated in 2018 with Israel for Rwanda to host migrants expelled by the Hebrew state.

Already applied in Australia, this policy of outsourcing asylum requests makes it possible to circumvent the international principle of "non-refoulement",
