The future family pool is slowly but surely growing up in Penzberg.

The first floor is already in the shell.

The plan is for the new indoor pool with sauna and fun slide to be ready in one and a half years.

But there are imponderables that affect many construction sites across Germany: rising prices and delivery problems for building materials.

Penzberg - Around 450 tons of steel have been used so far, plus around 3000 cubic meters of concrete. Stadtwerke board member André Behre calls these numbers. Things are progressing on the family bathroom construction site, which currently employs 21 workers from the Glass construction company and has two cranes. The structural work for the ground floor, which will one day house the foyer, changing rooms and technology, has been completed and the ceiling has been concreted. Since this week it continues with the upper floor. There will be a sports pool with diving facilities, a combination pool, a children's pool, restaurants and a sauna area.

According to Stadtwerke boss Behre, of the planned total costs of around 25 million euros, around 10 million euros were built up this week.

The construction process has gone smoothly so far, he says.

The construction site was also spared from accidents.

“I hope it stays that way,” says Behre.

He also highlights the commitment of Ulrike Franz, who played a key role in the planning.

“The whole team is really hooked here,” says Behre.

"We will get a really great building."

Imponderables due to rising raw material prices and delivery problems

According to him, 19 trades for the family pool construction have been awarded so far, of course the shell construction, which is currently running, but also for lifts, pool water technology or electrical installations, for example.

By contrast, around 30 trades are still outstanding.

According to Behre, the tender for the scaffolding and roofing work is currently running.

This is of great importance for the construction site and its further course.

Because the construction of the new Penzberg family pool, like other construction sites in Germany, could still be hit by rising raw material prices and delivery bottlenecks for building materials.

As reported, the prices for steel and wood, copper and insulation material, for example, have risen by a double-digit percentage.

Steel was recently 70 percent more expensive.

“At the moment we haven't noticed anything about the tenders,” explains André Behre.

For example, steel has been secured at a good price.

However, it doesn't have to stay that way for the next calls for tenders.

There could also be delivery bottlenecks.

All of this would have an impact on costs and the schedule.

"We have that on the radar," says the Stadtwerke board member.

Completion in winter 2022: "We are sticking to this at the moment"

The current family bathroom schedule stipulates that the shell will be finished by the end of October. The steel construction work is scheduled to begin at the beginning of November and the roof will be put on top at the end of November. The topping-out ceremony is also planned for November. The new pool is scheduled to open in winter 2022/2023. "We are sticking to that at the moment," says Behre. However, in view of the current raw material situation (“Only one trade has to be delayed in delivery”), he does not want to rule out the possibility of spring 2023 as well. More will be known after the next tender results.

The family pool will also have a new forecourt.

The construction site is currently being set up for work on the drainage.

According to Behre, the forecourt will probably be designed in mid-2022. The new multi-storey car park, which is currently planned with around 200 parking spaces, will also be built in the course of next year.

Searching for a name for a new family bathroom: over 800 entries

The question of a name for the new family bathroom remains. As reported, the Stadtwerke started a naming competition at the beginning of the year. There were 836 submissions, reports Behre. "There are nice suggestions," says indoor swimming pool department manager Ulrike Franz. "You can tell that people have thought about it." The jury, consisting of representatives of the city council groups, Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU), Ulrike Franz and André Behre, has not yet met due to corona. In July, if the infection allows it, it should be so far. After that, the future name should be published.
