Annoyed by the "roll lawn" statement: Penzberg is testing "rollable flower meadow" on streets

Roll turf on Penzberg traffic islands: These words, which were uttered during a debate about the city's finances, had recently caused a sensation.

However, there is some truth in that.

In the city, however, one doesn't like to hear the term "turf" that much.

There one speaks of a "rolling wildflower meadow" - and a test project.

Penzberg - It was a little swipe: When the Penzberg city council discussed the financial situation, savings targets and voluntary benefits at the end of April, CSU parliamentary group leader Maria Probst said: As long as Penzberg could afford a turf on a traffic island, there was room for voluntary benefits.

So are there turf turf on Penzberg traffic islands?

The city of Penzberg was now forced to comment.

The town hall indirectly confirmed the turf statement, but avoided the word.

The city declared that it was a "test project for the sustainable planting of roadside areas in Penzberg".

Penzberger meadow test: meadow should save time, effort and money

According to Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU), a so-called "Albrecht Dürer lawn" was laid out, in which flowers were sown. It is a test of whether you can save time, effort and ultimately money in this way. Carl-Christian Zimmermann from the climate protection department made a similar statement. He speaks of a wildflower meadow delivered in rolls that is being tested on around 400 square meters in the vicinity of other flowering areas. The meadow is equipped with native grasses and flowers that promise a multi-year growth. According to him, the rolling wildflower meadow is produced without any chemicals, does not need any chemical pesticides, produces small amounts of clippings and, except in the growing phase, does not require any additional irrigation. Likewise, new seeds no longer have to be bought and planted every year.

"We wanted to try something different"

The building yard manager Christian Eberl was annoyed by the turf statement. The suggestion for the "Albrecht Dürer lawn" comes from his colleague Benedikt Burger, who last year completed the master's examination in "gardening and landscaping" with the Bavarian State Prize. He brought the idea with him from the master school. “We wanted to try something different, something that corresponds to what the Nature Conservation Association has been calling for for a long time,” says Christian Eberl. Something different than the “Eschweger Blossom Magic”, which the Association of Nature Conservation rejects. The Dürer meadow contains native wildflowers, herbs and grasses. In addition, Eberl shows a list of the manufacturer, who comes from the vicinity of Ingolstadt: yarrow, Günsel, quendel-leaved sandwort, daisies, round-leaved bellflower, cuckoo-cream,Community of knapweed, meadow rennet, hawkweed, scabious, dandelion, meadow margarite and various types of plantain.

Test at several locations in Penzberg

The "Albert-Dürer-Rasen" has been rolled out in several places in Penzberg since last April.

For example, on the median in front of the roundabout on Seeshaupter Straße (from the direction of the Autobahn) and on a strip next to the roundabout on the footpath to the Hubersee.

Depot manager Eberl also names three small areas at the junction of Wölfl and Nonnenwaldstraße (on the forest side) as well as a strip and a central island at the exit towards Sindelsdorf (opposite the confluence with Im Dittenried).

On the one hand, the building yard manager expects less effort with the new meadow variant - since 2016 the building yard has been planting around 1,500 square meters of urban areas with flower meadows.

On the other hand, it is also not that expensive.

Eberl is now expecting experience from the test project.
