Arturo Cruz was accused of "an attack against Nicaraguan society" by the authorities led by Daniel Ortega, within a wave of political repression prior to the presidential elections in November.

The Nicaraguan Prosecutor's Office has reported this Saturday the arrest of Arturo Cruz Sequeira, candidate of the opposition party Alianza Ciudadana in the presidential elections scheduled for November 7 in which Daniel Ortega intends to achieve a fourth term (he has led the country since 2007) between complaints of repression and abuse of power.

Cruz is the second opposition candidate arrested this week by the Nicaraguan authorities, after Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, who led the polls and is now under house arrest for alleged "abusive management and ideological falsehood in competition with money, property and assets laundering."

Cruz, 67, has been detained for "strong evidence" of having "an attack on Nicaraguan society and the rights of the people,"

according to the statement from the Prosecutor's Office.

He was arrested on Saturday morning at the international airport in Managua, the country's capital, when he was returning from a trip to the United States, his team reported to the Spanish news agency Efe.

The opposition candidates Félix Maradiaga and Juan Sebastián Chamorro have also denounced that they were informed that they have "a house for jail until further notice", although there are no accusations against them.

have reported being the object of persecution and harassment by the police

.

During his visit to the United States, Cruz, former ambassador of the Ortega government between 2007 and 2009 and one of the applicants who meet almost all the requirements, said: "If the dance of inhibitions continues and we are left without other candidates, the logical thing is that this server does not participate in that [electoral] process ".
