Starnberg

- "We are totally relieved and happy that we can finally open again after almost six months", says Elena Lakopoulos. A few days before Christmas last year, the Greek family, who had been running the “Greek Taverna” in Starnberg for almost a quarter of a century, had to close their restaurant overnight. But not because of the corona pandemic, but because the listed Bayerischer Hof, in which the "Greek", which is extremely popular with many Starnbergers, is allegedly in acute danger of collapse. There is considerable danger to life and limb, the city of Starnberg justified its radical step back then. But now the city has agreed that the Lakopoulos family may reopen their business - but only in the associated garden. The building itself may not be entered - neither by guests nor by staff. The Hotel Bayerischer Hof and the associated Café Prinzregent, however, will remain closed.

The concept of the Lakopoulos family is that everything takes place outdoors. The food is cooked in a food truck, and the city of Starnberg has provided the restaurateur with a market stall. And the municipality has also commissioned a sanitary container, as press spokeswoman Lena Choi explains. The toilet trolley will not be delivered until June 14th and 20th. So that the "Greek Taverna" can serve guests again as early as next week - the official opening date is next Thursday, June 10th - the workers' welfare organization Starnberg is providing the landlord with the toilets in their rooms right next door as a temporary interim solution. “As a thank you, my dad will present a donation to the workers' welfare,” says Elena Lakopoulos.

She and her family are very happy with the way things have developed. “This is a good solution for us.” Due to the limited cooking facilities, the restaurateurs cannot of course offer their full menu. "But there will be all classic Greek dishes," promises Elena Lakopulos. In addition to the typical starters and salads, grilled dishes such as souvlaki or bifteki are on offer, but guests don't have to do without gyros either. In addition, there should alternate between a certain dish of the day, such as braised leg of lamb, "which we can prepare at home". The garden, which is open daily from 11.30 a.m. until evening, has a seat for around 80 people, “but we also offer food to go”. Even if you only have a coffeewho wants to enjoy a beer or a glass of wine to relax is welcome. In order to create a cozy atmosphere, the restaurant owners have also embellished the site fence that was erected around the building with bamboo tubes. “It should be a kind of Greek summer bar,” says Elena Lakopoulos. Of course, the weather also has to play a role. "But we are also open when it has light drizzle, as our garden is partly covered and we have large umbrellas."because our garden is partly covered and we have large umbrellas. "because our garden is partly covered and we have large umbrellas. "

The host family plans to run the outdoor catering until the beginning of October, "then we'll see how it goes on," says Elena Lakopoulos.

How exactly things will go on with the Bayerischer Hof has not yet been determined.

At least the city council agrees that "the Bayerlein Villa, the Bayerischer Hof and the Rondell, at least in their external appearance, should be preserved in any case," it said at the end of April (we reported).
