The renovation work on the Schongau fire station has come a long way.

The rooms are bright and modern.

And everything is barrier-free - including the large training room on the upper floor.

Schongau

- With the vehicle hall, the first phase of construction began in October 2019.

"The construction and renovation work was completed by the summer of 2020," says Till Penski from the municipal building authority, only individual works are still missing.

For example, there are still the lockers that will soon find their place in the main building.

Planning such a construction site is not an easy undertaking, because the fire brigade must always be ready for action.

Commander Werner Berchtold is also firmly involved with a small team and keeps an eye on what is happening.

A construction meeting takes place once a week.

95 percent of the work has been completed, estimates Berchtold, who leads through the functional building.

Elevator makes the building barrier-free

An important innovation: an elevator was also installed.

This means that the building is largely accessible - even and above all the large training room on the first floor.

This will now get a new floor and will be equipped with media technology - then it can start.

The hall could serve as a barrier-free polling station this autumn.

Another important innovation: The fire station is now equipped with its own fire alarm system.

This had not existed before.

“But there are values that are written here,” said Berchtold, referring to the vehicle fleet.

Lots of space for the Schongau fire brigade

Since the respiratory protection workshop found space in the fire station, there is also more space available in the main building.

“Everything the staff needs is in the functional building,” says Penski.

Starting with the changing rooms, also everything new and separate for the women of the Wehr - up to a new alarm access from the south side and the exercise tower.

There is additional space for meetings, and a cozy fire brigade parlor will of course be set up again - a retreat for the team.

Till Penski estimates that everything could be finished by the end of June.

“But we are also experiencing a material shortage, the tiles were not delivered as planned.” There is also a slight delay due to the weather, and external work is still pending.

"It takes a little longer, but we see it in a somewhat relaxed way," said Penski.

The completion date would have been the end of May, "if we are now a month over, we are pretty good at it."

A total of 2.47 million euros was estimated for the hall and main building. The final settlement has not yet been made, but the risk budget must be touched, Penski estimates. In the course of the renovation, some larger points emerged that were not planned in this way. Asbestos removal in the stairwell and in the hall, a new drainage channel over the entire length of the hall, changes to the oil separator, asphalting work - "there were unforeseeable additional costs, but on the whole we got through well," said Penski. The input plans for the main building date from 1969, the building has been largely unchanged since then.

Everyone would now look forward to an inauguration ceremony.

Except for a groundbreaking ceremony, nothing had happened so far - everything had fallen into the water due to the pandemic.

“And when the fire brigade invites, more than 25 people come,” laughs Penski.

You want to think about something, but there are no plans yet.

“Let's see what happens in autumn”, the commander is also cautiously optimistic.

When the mask requirement and distance are no longer necessary, you can imagine another big open house for the coming year.
