Unesco World Heritage: the candidacy of the city of Vichy on track

The inclusion of Vichy and ten other European water towns on the World Heritage list could be debated in July in China.

An advisory committee gave a favorable opinion on their candidacy, welcomed the town hall of Vichy on Saturday.

ICOMOS, the consultative body of the Unesco World Heritage Committee, recommended on Friday the inclusion of the

“large water towns of Europe”

in the inventory of cultural property of exceptional interest.

ICOMOS has confirmed that the candidate cities

“bear exceptional testimony to the European thermal phenomenon, which acquired its highest expression between 1700 and the 1930s”

.

The final decision will be taken during the 44th session of the committee to be held from Fuzhou (China) from July 16 to 31, the town hall said in a statement.

Other candidate cities

Besides Vichy, the other candidate cities for the

“World Heritage”

label

are Baden bei Wien (Austria), Spa (Belgium), Frantiskovy Lázne, Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázne (Czech Republic), Bad Ems, Bad Kissingen and Baden-Baden (Germany ), Montecatini Terme (Italy) and Bath (United Kingdom).

The process was launched in 2012. The Allier resort had prepared for it with a project to restore the Parc des Sources and renovate its surroundings, as well as the programming of a museum space in a former large spa establishment. .
