Russell already in the pits

The Williams comes to a stop at the end of the first lap.

He abandons his soft tires to put on the hard compounds.

He emerges last and far behind the pack.

Leclerc got off to a good start

The Monegasque leads the race with six tenths ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

One more turn before the arrival of the DRS.

Perez passes Sainz and Gasly

No story at the time of this departure.

Sergio Perez made a superb take-off, jumping Sainz and passing Gasly at turn 3. The Mexican is fourth.

The training tour

The drivers set off for the warm-up lap on the Baku track.

The temperature has dropped by around ten degrees since yesterday and this could play a big role in the behavior of the tires.

Norrispenalized by three places

Initially sixth after qualifying, Lando Norris tumbled down three positions a few moments after chasing against the clock.

The British failed to follow the red flag procedure after Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo) crashed in Q1.

The sanction could have been heavier but the commissioners considered that the reaction time was very short.

Norris therefore gets away with three penalty places and will start ninth, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas.

Lots of breakages on Saturday

Four red flags in qualifying, Saturday left its mark on some single-seaters. In Q1,

Antonio Giovinazzi

(Alfa Romeo) and

Lance Stroll

(Aston Martin) smashed their cars at the turn15. A turn that trapped many drivers in free practice, such as Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc or Max Verstappen. In Q2, it was

Daniel Ricciardo

(McLaren) who hit the wall at turn5 and gave work to his team. Finally, in Q3,

Yuki Tsunoda

sent his Alpha Tauri into the wall at turn 3, causing

Carlos Sainz

(Ferrari) to

crash

in the same turn. Some mechanics didn't get much sleep last night ...

Turn 15 causin 'trouble 😈Will it strike again during the race?

Verstappen leader of the world ranking

For the first of his career, Max Verstappen leads the world championship with four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Among manufacturers, Red Bull took power in Monaco with a small lead over Mercedes.

Gaslybien placed, Ocon trapped

First in the third free practice session, Pierre Gasly knew he had a car to do well in Baku.

He confirmed it in the afternoon.

A lucky hair with the red flags, the Normanda managed to slam the fourth time of the qualifications.

A real performance for the Alpha Tauri (Tsunoda, his teammate, is 7th). Alongside Max Verstappen on the second row in a few moments, the Frenchman can score big points this Sunday.

Less satisfied, Esteban Ocon will try to get him into the top 10. Eliminated in Q2 with the 12th time, he was also in the process of improving in the last moments of the session but DanielRicciardo hit the wall and caused a red flag, the Alpine rider was inevitably disappointed on Saturday but aware that the points remain within reach.

Qualified 4th !!!

What a crazy quali.Felt amazing to fight right at the top, so close from the Top 3. Excited for tomorrow pic.twitter.com/ttJrRuaQyq

A minute of silence

A moment of contemplation is observed on the starting grid in tribute to Max Mosley, former president of the FIA, and Mansour Ojjeh, historic shareholder of McLaren.

Bottom continues to disappoint

Forced to retire in Monaco following a disastrous stop when he was second, Valtteri Bottas was spied on this weekend in Baku. A reaction was expected.

But his weekend got off to a bad start with a late plane on Thursday on the eve of testing.

In line with this arrival, the Finn never found a rhythm during the three free practice sessions.

And in Q3 unsurprisingly, the number from Mercedes was content with a modest tenth place. Will he be able to come back?

Not easy.

Mercedes is a car that suffers in traffic, and in Baku there are a lot of them.

at 13:34

… Unhappy Verstappen

RedBull looked so over the top.

Even Sergio Perez was on an incredible pace on Saturday morning.

The red flags turned things upside down and Max Verstappen made a few small mistakes.

The Dutchman will start from third row, behind Leclerc and Hamilton.

Not the hoped-for position but he remains the favorite of the race all the same, as his car is so comfortable on this track.

However, he will have to quickly get rid of Lewis Hamilton and that promises to offer us another very hot duel between the two drivers.

at 13:34

Hamiltons satisfied ...

And the qualifier may not be strong enough.

Nowhere in Monaco, only seventh, then wandering Friday in free practice, Lewis Hamilton looked like he was on his way to a tough second weekend, and then Mercedes found something that literally propelled their cars into the last sector.

Not enough for Bottas but decent for the seven-time world champion.

He didn't need any more.

Close to stealing pole from everyone, the British was content with second place, unexpected when waking up on Saturday.

The race promises to be different, of course, but he starts ahead of Max Verstappen and that's already a very good point.

Not often is @LewisHamilton happy with P2 ... But after struggles in practice, he'll be starting on the front row tomorrow!

Leclercla pole in chaos

It ended like the one obtained in Monaco, on a red flag, the fourth of the session, but this time,

Charles Leclerc

had a smile because his Ferrari was well intact.

The Monegasque, a little surprised himself by his performance, clinched his ninth polesSaturday and the second in a row sign of a return of Ferrari? This needs to be confirmed outside the city circuits.

But unlike Monte-Carlo, Leclerc will play for victory in a few minutes (Editor's note: He was unable to start the race due to a transmission problem on his car).

He will be behind him Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) but his Scuderia is doing well and in Baku, it is better to be ahead than elsewhere in the peloton.

at 13:24

Baku, the spectacle in perspective

The last urban circuit of the season, after the withdrawal of Singapore, Bakou is a track that promises action.

We saw it from the qualification.

Here, with the immense straight start / finish line, it is possible to overtake and even surprise your opponent elsewhere on the circuit.

Unlike Monaco.

The safety car risks are very high here and it would not be surprising if the race is restarted several times, to our delight.
