In Saxony-Anhalt, a new state parliament will be elected on Sunday (8 a.m.).
Around 1.8 million eligible voters are called upon to cast their votes.
Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff is fighting for an election victory for the CDU and for a third term in office.
In surveys, the ruling Christian Democrats were mostly ahead, but in some cases closely followed by the AfD, which can again count on a strong result.
The FDP can hope for a return to the state parliament.
After the election, according to the latest polls, a continuation of the currently ruling Kenya coalition of CDU, SPD and Greens would be possible.
A black-red-yellow or black-green-yellow alliance are also conceivable.
The state election in Saxony-Anhalt is considered the last mood test before the federal election on September 26th.

The Saxony-Anhalt state parliament will be elected for the eighth time on June 6, 2021.
The state election takes place every five years.
Eligible to vote are people aged 18 and over who have been living in Saxony-Anhalt for at least three months.
The polling stations open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.

But even if the AfD should prevail as the strongest force: No party in the state parliament will want to enter into an alliance with it.
Based on surveys, a “Jamaica” - (CDU, Greens, FDP), “Kenya” - (CDU, SPD, Greens), “Zimbabwe” - (CDU, SPD, Greens, FDP) or “Germany” coalition * would be most likely conceivable.
The currently ruling Kenya coalition was formed in 2016 out of necessity.
In 2020, the alliance almost broke up.
One thing is certain: Saxony-Anhalt is facing weeks of tough coalition negotiations after the state elections.
