The death toll from floods and mudslides caused by torrential rains in Sri Lanka has risen to 14, with two missing.
The Associated Press quoted the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Center as saying today that ten people died due to the floods, while four others, who are from one family, died due to mudslides that submerged their house in the Kigal district, east of Colombo.
The center added that the severe weather affected about 245,000 people, while more than 4,300 others are still in emergency shelters, and more than 800 homes were damaged.
In turn, the Sri Lankan Navy said it has deployed 33 teams in the flooded areas, pointing out that 66 people stranded by flood waters have been rescued so far.
A previous toll of the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Center indicated yesterday that six people were killed and five others missing due to floods and landslides.
