Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made no bones about superlatives on Friday to announce an additional discovery of natural gas in the Black Sea. The Asmara-1 exploration well could contain up to 135 billion cubic meters; it is part of the Sakarya field, where Turkey announced last year a potential of 405 billion cubic meters in another well. President Erdogan wanted to moderate its effects with an interval of three days between the announcement of the information and its concrete translation. While the Turkish economy is experiencing enormous difficulties - the central bank has changed governors twice in less than a year - all communication is meant to be dynamic.

On the scale of other global natural gas fields, Sakarya's reserves remain modest.
In addition, given the level of depth, extraction costs are anticipated as high by oil experts.
