- “There are more and more authors on the road.” Many road users share this assessment and relate it to their personal experiences on the streets.

But how is traffic actually developing?

In order to be able to answer this question, there is usually a traffic count throughout Germany every five years according to the guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

Due to Corona, the count actually planned for 2020 has been postponed by one year. The time has now come since April and until mid-October. That's why you see people with clipboards and pens or click counters on selected sections of the route in the Freising district. They keep tally sheets of the number of cars, buses, motorcycles, and trucks that drive past them. You can also see these meters sitting on the roadside in the Freising district.

In order to get a reliable average value for the amount of traffic, counts are made at different times.

The data is recorded on so-called normal working days - i.e. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - in the morning and in the afternoon.

It is also counted on Friday afternoons and on some Sundays.

The meters record motorized two-wheelers, cars, delivery vans and vans, buses, trucks over 3.5 tons without trailers and trucks.

But there are also temporary, automated counting stations in the district: They are located in special, mobile guide posts on the roadside, not recognizable from the outside.

They record the volume of traffic using so-called side radar technology and pass the data on to a central computer.

There are 49 of these posts in the Freising district.

The Freising road maintenance depot moves them to a different location every week.

The results of the road traffic census form an important basis for planning and equipping roads, but also for noise protection measures.
