In the case of anti-Semitic riots, protesters of Arab origin in particular have recently been the target of the investigation. CDU interior expert Middelberg is now calling for those who have previously been burdened to be denied naturalization.

After anti-Semitic incidents during demonstrations in Germany, the domestic political spokesman for the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Mathias Middelberg (CDU), wants to tighten citizenship law.

Anti-Semites are supposed to be excluded from naturalization.

"Citizenship law should expressly regulate that naturalizations of people who have committed anti-Semitic acts are excluded," said Middelberg of the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ).

The change should be voted on in parliament this week.

"Anyone who publicly incites against Jews, questions the existence of the State of Israel or burns the Israeli flag cannot become a German citizen," said Middelberg.

In the law on citizenship, the following sentence should be added: "Naturalization is excluded if the foreigner has carried out an anti-Semitically motivated act." In addition to the required declaration of loyalty, the law should include the express reference that anti-Semitically motivated acts with the human dignity guarantee of the Basic Law are incompatible.

Angela Merkel: The existence of the State of Israel is German reasons of state

For several days at the end of May, hundreds of people took to the streets in Germany because of the conflict between Israel and Palestinians. There was also violence. Investigations against 111 suspects have been started in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to State Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU), these were primarily people from the Arab region: in particular Lebanese and Syrian citizens, but also Germans with an Arab migration history. Seven suspects had previously been targeted by state security.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel's statement that the existence of the State of Israel is German raison d'état should not "run idle," emphasized Middelberg when calling for the law to be changed.

This must "be given special attention in the case of naturalizations."

The CDU internal politician asked the SPD to approve his proposal in the Bundestag this week.

Not only Muslim anti-Semitism is underestimated

The hatred of Jews in Germany had long been massively underestimated, said the anti-Semitism officer of the Berlin police, Wolfram Pemp, after the riots in the Tagesspiegel: "Not just Muslim anti-Semitism, but anti-Semitism in its entirety."

The head of the Christian Democrats in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, had given parties like the AfD joint responsibility for anti-Semitic protests after riots in May.

"Radicals such as the AfD in Germany or Le Pen in France have fueled border shifts in anti-Semitism," said the deputy CSU chairman of the newspapers of the Funke media group.
